Week 1: Body - Day 6: Maintenance

“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 6:9) This sounds like the proclamation of a great king, and indeed it is! But if you were an Israelite who read this verse two-thousand years ago, would you expect your God-Hero to be born in a lowly manger? Probably not. This beautiful paradox teaches us many things, but what could it teach us about maintaining our own bodies? The important lesson that the Lord is sharing with us is the lesson of “baby steps”.

“The God of the universe changed the entire world by becoming human, but He started with literal baby steps.”

If we want to improve the way we take care of ourselves, we must learn this lesson. We always hear about New Year’s resolutions to get to the gym more or to eat better, but these resolutions usually seem to lack any type of “baby steps”. Sometimes, it seems like we think we can leap out of the manger. The God of the universe changed the entire world by becoming human, but He started with literal baby steps. It only seems fitting that we follow his example. Instead of saying “I am going to run a marathon by the summer”, say “I will run 10 minutes each day”. Soon you will be running that marathon, but it starts with baby steps.

So together, let’s all make an Advent resolution! What baby steps can you take to improve your diet, fitness, or rest?
